Jordan’s Song Of The Day

Song: Breaking Hearts

Artists: James Vincent McMorrow

Well, I’m back. I don’t know how consistent I’ll be with this since I’m attending school and everything, but I’ll do my best for anyone out there who likes random songs.

James Vincent McMorrow is a folk sing-songwriter out of Dublin, and has been climbing in popularity. This track is off of his debut album, Early In The Morning. The entire album has a very relaxed feel, and gives the impression that James wrote this album while coming to self-realizations about himself.

Whether that is true or not, I’m not sure. That is just what I take from it.

This track, to me, sounds like he has come to terms that he no longer has feelings for someone, and inevitably must break their heart and move on. He is content with the situation, simply because he’s used to it, singing “I’ve been breaking hearts for far too long, loving you for far too long.”

On the flip side, it could mean that he’s been breaking hearts of other women while staying true to one.

Listen to the track, enjoy it, think it over, and maybe let me know what you think.

Be sure to check out James’ album, Early In The Morning. It is a great listen.

Brand New - Be Gone

Rock/Indie

Album: Daisy

Brand New is an excellent example of an evolving band. They’ve gone from a pop-punk sounding band to an even more individual and experimental sound. They received a lot of negative criticism after releasing Daisy because it was too “different” from their more well-known style.

I think this song is very creative. From the southern rocking acoustic guitar riff and the raw instrument sound in the background, to the barely audible lyrics in the foreground, the track brings its own personality to the recording. If you can make out the lyrics, I believe the song is about a prayer. Jesse (vocalist) is praying to God, but he ahs been struggling with communicating with him late, hence the inaudible vocal track.

This is really a unique song all in itself, and I really enjoy it. Give it a listen and let me know what you think about it, too.

And of course, be sure to check out the rest of Brand New’s impressively large arsenal.

Cage The Elephant - Ain’t No Rest For The Wicked

Indie/Rock

Album: Cage The Elephant

This is a great song. It has an awesome souther rock feel to it, and the slide guitar keeps everything interesting. It’s simply about what drives people to do demeaning actions in order to get money. The chorus sings:

“There ain’t no rest for the wicked, and money don’t grow on trees. I’ve got bills to pay, I’ve got mouths to feed, ain’t nothin’ in this world for free.”

The vocalist sings about prostitute, an armed mugger, and a church donation thief, and how they do what they do to just simply make it to another day. It’s actually a great track and has a great feel to it.

This band has grown up quite well in the past couple years, and touring with Manchester Orchestra got them much more noticed I’m sure. Give this track a listen, along with the rest of their tracks. They’re a hit-and-miss band for me, but they definitely have some good tunes.

Jordan’s song of the day:

Normally I do a song of the day (almost) every day.

But today is my 20th birthday.

So I am obligated to go out and drink a lot of beer.

Here is what I say for my Song of the Day:

Fuck you, I’m drunk - Bondo

http://bit.ly/pwRKix

This is a great drinking/st. Patty’s day song.

Listen, love, and have a few beers!

I’m off to drink beer!

Jordan’s Song of the Day:

All That Remains - Not Alone

Metal

I won’t lie, I used to love these guys when I was younger. I grew out of them and recently stumbled back onto their music in my iTunes the other night. All That Remains never failed to bring really great melodies through technical guitar parts to deepen the sound of the track, and the drummer (in my opinion) always brought some really interesting beats to the table, and some incredibly fast double-kick action (Check out “This Calling”). Also, the vocalist has a great range between screaming and singing. It all fits together.

I fell out of these guys when they released the album ‘Overcome’, but I still really like the stuff from “The Fall Of Ideals” and “This Darkened Heart”.

Give these guys a listen for sure. I enjoy(ed) them, and you should too. I also think they recently released a new album? I’m off to look that up.

Enjoy!

Alexisonfire - This Could Be Anywhere In The World

Rock

First off, happy Monday! Just kidding, ‘cause Mondays suck.

I’m sure that by now everyone has heard the news about Alexisonfire. It is true, and they are breaking up. Dallas wants to focus on City & Colour while Wade wants to focus on another band that he’s been asked to join. They mentioned that they’d be releases some new stuff they had cooked up and setting up a final good-bye tour in Ontario/Canada before disbanding. (Read the AOF post here: http://bit.ly/qwnHI0 )

Alexisonfire was never one of my favourite bands, but I never disliked them either. They were a good bunch of talented (Canadian)  boys, and of course Dallas Green got his kick-off with this group as well. They never put out a bad album, and thye never put out the same album. They were always changing in a good way and growing as musicians.

This song has always been one of my favourites by AOF for some reason, and I’m not sure. Maybe it’s just the big beat behind it and the way Wade helps out on the vocals, too.

Be sure to give the track a listen, along with rest of their stuff. These guys went down as a good band, and they didn’t let it get too out of hand by trying to replace Dallas and Wade, because that just wouldn’t be Alexisonfire any longer. So sit back, crack a beer and celebrate a decade of great Canadian-born music.

R.I.P. Alexisonfire, you will be missed.

Jordan’s Song Of The Day

Manchester Orchestra - I Can Feel Your Pain

Indie/Acoustic

My posts seem to be getting later. Oh my.

Anyway, my choice for the song of the day today is Manchester Orchestra’s ‘I Can Feel Your Pain’.

Why? Simply because it is just such a simply amazing and powerful song. Andy Hull never fails to somehow prevail incredibly in whatever he writes. He could re-do Rebecca Black’s “Friday” in an acoustic version and make it sound absolutely amazing.

Simply put, this song is about loss, dealing with loss, and coping with the fact that there is nothing you can do in most tragic situations. Some situations are just so emotionally damaging that it scars your forever. Andy Hull portrays his emotions incredibly well in this song. (Honestly, there isn’t a single song he hasn’t portrayed perfectly). Almost anybody can relates to this song in some way; whether it be from a direct loss in the family, or a connected loss, we’ve all felt the pains associated with this song. It made me tear up the first time I heard it.

There isn’t much I can really say on this beautiful track. It’s sad, that is for sure, and it may hit you hard, but nothing feels better than a song that describes what you feel/felt at one point in your life.

Be sure to give it a listen, and check out all of Manchester’s material.

Jordan’s Song of the Day:

Dead and Divine - Like Wolves

Metal/Hardcore/Punk

In leu of the release of Dead and Divine’s newest studio album “Antimacy” (Which I’m sure you saw the link for the stream last week), I decided I wanted to post one of the first songs I really got into from this band. Off of their first album, “The Fanciful”, the track ‘Like Wolves’ get the energy flowing right away. A quick drum fill into a speedy guitar riff raise the energy behind Matt’s screaming vocals. The track doesn’t really slow down at all until about two thirds in when the chorus hits for the first time. It is a really well laid out track, and when Matt start to sing that chorus you can’t help but feel your ears start to smile inside.

There is two thing I must say about Dead and Divine:

1) They can take the most simplistic riffs and ideas and turn them into a track that will absolutely destroy you if you’re not ready for it. Carefully placed guitar riffs with detail-oriented drumming makes this band the immense powerhouse that they have become known for.

2) Matt is a great lyricist. It’s just that. Whether Matt actually knows it or not, he can find his way around words and create phrases a wouldn’t have ever thought of using. Not only can he write about whatever is on his mind in such a well-drawn manner, but he knows how to sing and scream it to bring the emotion across, too.

Be sure to take a listen to this track, and of course, all of their other tracks from The Fanciful, The Machines We Are, and Antimacy!

Jordan’s Song of the Day:

William Fitzsimmons - I Kissed A Girl (Katy Perry Cover)

Acoustic/Indie/Cover

First of all, I apologize for missing yesterday. It was a holiday Monday where I live, so it got me all confused and I though it was still Sunday.

Either way, happy tuesday!

Everyone knows that song that was played on the radio all last summer, about the girl that kissed another girl and she liked it? Yeah, the one that Katy Perry sung!

Anyway, this William Fitzsimmons guy is a folk/indie artist, and he decided to put his own spin on it. Believe it or not, it makes the song much, much, MUCH better! A nice, mellow acoustic guitar with some shaker in the background, and a soft voice instead of a s***load of synth and some girl yelling into an auto-tune machine. This track is really improved in this version for sure. Yes, I know, Katy Perry won a bunch of awards and blah blah, but you wont hear this version on the radio, and as a general rule of mine, that is how you know it’s pretty good.

Have a listen, and if you’re not convinced, listen to some of his other original tracks. They’re quite soothing as well. I’m sure a few of them will make it to the song of the day eventually.

(Suggested for people that enjoy Andy Hull, Bon Iver, etc.)

Have a wonderful night!
